The Marching Band Open Series (MBOS) was founded in 2006 with a three-fold mission:
- Provide the region’s competitive marching band activity with superior performance venues
- Consistent rules and policies
- Utilize nationally recognized and prominent adjudicators for each event to provide the very best educational and constructive commentary possible.
Under the umbrella of the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC—the nation’s largest and most highly acclaimed winter guard “circuit”), MBOS hosted three contests its first year. Positive reviews in 2006 from member band directors, instructional staff members and fans helped to secure a second and third season, and each year MBOS grew with more marching bands from across the region participating. MBOS has earned a reputation for its consistency in adjudication, an emphasis on a music education foundation, and for leading the digital revolution in the marching band activity by providing adjudicators with a state of the art recording system allowing them to record their comments real time as bands performed, and supplying them directly to staff members of participating bands immediately following their performance.
As mentioned above, in order for the music education foundation to be built, MBOS relied heavily on some of Southern California’s top music educators to help form the philosophy now used. As part of our Mission Statement, MBOS believes in competition and with music leading the way, and as well respects and recognizes visual creativity, and artistic freedom.
MBOS offers both standard and prelims/finals formatted competitions, providing more choices for the band director in selecting shows. MBOS also offers a season ending championships which features up to 30 bands in preliminary competition and 12 bands in finals with a full band retreat ceremony that is truly a spectacle to be seen. As well, MBOS features the champion band in a “victory concert” at the conclusion of the championship.
MBOS over the years has expanded its geographical reach offering events in Nevada and California, with more exciting expansion plans for the future. In all, tens of thousands of performers and spectators have experienced the magic of an MBOS sponsored competition.
